There are a lot of things we teach children as they’re growing up. The first things we teach them are their names, ages and then where they live.

But, when is the right time to teach them what to do in an emergency? We think you should do so as soon as possible.

Imagine you are out somewhere, or home, and you become extremely ill and only your child is around. You might think “Oh I taught my child what to do in an emergency.” But, can they physically do this?

It’s so important that your child knows how to do do the following:

  • Where to locate your phone
  • Know how to open or unlock the phone
  • Navigate to the phone key-pad or know how to access the emergency screen
  • Physically dial 9-1-1
  • Once they successfully connect to 9-1-1, would they know what to say

Jeff Rossen from the Today Show did an experiment back in May addressing this important matter. We think you will be as surprised as we were with the results!

Put your kids to the test! Try this at home too.

And most importantly, take the time to talk with your child, practice these skills, and ensure you are all prepared for an emergency.

Hopefully these skills are never needed!
